The Center for Practical Bioethics honored nurses, social workers, chaplains and allied health professionals with Frontline Action Awards during activities September 8 in Kansas City.

Thirty one professionals were nominated for the awards. The event recognized professionals who work directly with patients and families in a healthcare setting.

Characteristics and evaluation criteria for the Frontline Action Awards included respect for the dignity of others, professional competence, a willingness to provide compassionate care to all people, and appreciation for ethical dialogue.

The four recognized for their work were:

  • Rosemary Hubble, RN, MA, MDiv, pediatric advanced comfort care team, Children's Mercy Hospital and Clinics
  • Shellie Brandon, LMSW, hospice home health cancer resource center, Olathe Medical Center
  • David Vincent Morando, NREMTP, assistant chief of administration, Johnson County Med-Act
  • Janie Wood, DMin, BCC, assistant director of chaplaincy services, Children's Mercy Hospital and Clinics

Hob Osterlund, RN, palliative care nurse and nationally known humorist, presented her unique approach to health care before an audience of more than 200 people.

The event also served as a fundraiser for the Center for Practical Bioethics, raising more than $31,000.
